LET IT BE was\r\ngreeted with mixed reviews when it came out in 1970, and is still a\r\ncontroversial disc in the band's catalogue--many fans reject it, while others\r\ndefend it fiercely. Notable for its difference from anything else the Beatles\r\nrecorded, LET IT BE has a raw, ragged, muscular sound that recalls the band's\r\nvery earliest rock roots. The songs were mostly recorded live (save Phil\r\nSpector's overdubs on \"The Long and Winding Road\", \"Across the\r\nUniverse\", and \"I Me Mine\"), and the result is a world away from\r\nthe meticulous, high-sheen sophistication of the group's George Martin-produced\r\nreleases.\u003cbr\u003e\r\nNo one is likely to argue that LET IT BE is the band's best album, but it is a\r\nstrong release nonetheless. From the easy-rolling folk feel of \"Two of\r\nUs\" to the interlocking vocals and screaming guitar of \"I've Got a\r\nFeeling\" to the epoch-making title cut (one of Paul McCartney's finest\r\nmoments), the album bristles with good song writing and gutsy energy. There are\r\nmoments of filler--the rock \u0026amp; roll rehash \"One After 909\", for\r\nexample--but at its best, as on John Lennon's meditative \"Across the\r\nUniverse\" and the driving \"Get Back\" (which features Billy\r\nPreston on keys and is the record's high point), it shows the Beatles for what\r\nthey always were: a top-notch, hard-working rock band.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e1.
