The wastelands return in this anticipated third instalment in the Fallout role playing series from genre veterans Bethesda Softworks.
Bethesda Softworks are best known for their expansive Elder Scrolls series: a role playing title full of wide open landscapes in an ancient fantasy realm, far removed from the 50s-inspired future of the Fallout universe. The developer has taken their work with the role playing series and applied it to Fallout 3, a post-apocalyptic world overrun with mutated creatures and humans doing their best to survive. Players take the role of a resident from Vault 101, one of many vaults sealed underground before nuclear warfare destroyed the world as we know it, leaving his home for the first time.
Many of the gameplay elements from the Elder Scrolls series have been transferred to Fallout 3, along with a number of improvements made to the formula, namely in combat. The V.A.T.S., or Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, allows players to pause time and target specific limbs on an enemy with the weaponry scattered across the land, not always in plentiful supply.
Fallout 3 takes the dark humour and rich back story of previous Fallout titles and, in the safe hands of Bethesda, transforms it into a modern-day role playing epic.
