Don Siegel directs this 1960s American crime drama. Veteran New York detective Daniel Madigan (Richard Widmark) is given a severe dressing down by Commissioner Anthony X. Russell (Henry Fonda) after allowing a dangerous killer to elude his clutches.
Russell gives Madigan just 72 hours to track his man down, but the detective's task is made more difficult by his complicated personal life: his social-climbing wife Julia (Inger Stevens) wants him to quit the force, while Madigan is also conducting an affair with a nightclub singer.
