Jackie Chan directs and stars in this Cantonese-language action comedy. Gwok Zan-Waa (Chan) is a kind-hearted man who struggles when he first arrives in Hong Kong and soon finds himself destitute. Impoverished flower seller Madame Kao (Gua Ah Leh) convinces him to buy one of her roses and when his luck changes, he attributes it to the rose and begins buying one from her every day.
After providing help to a dying gang boss in the middle of a turf war, he is named the man's successor and strives to win the respect of the gang members and find new ways for them to make money. Meanwhile, Madame Kao needs help when she learns that her daughter is coming to visit with her wealthy fiancé. The cast also includes Anita Mui, Wu Ma and Lo Lieh.
