Link lived peacefully on Outset Island until a bird captured his little sister, and he came to her rescue. When an amiibo is placed on the GamePad, that character will be brought into the game. Players can either watch the character battle other characters, battle alongside the character, or battle against the character. The more the amiibo is played, the more it levels up, unlocking different moves, equipment, and customisation options. They will also level up faster when pitted against other amiibo fighters.

As well as working with the Nintendo Wii U, amiibo can also be used with Nintendo 3DS and 2DS consoles via an accessory that is planned for release in 2015. amiibo will also be compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL.
