Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner and Fred Astaire star in this apocalyptic sci-fi drama directed by Stanley Kramer. In 1964, nuclear war has wiped out all life in Earth's northern hemisphere. After discovering San Francisco to be devastated and deserted, US submarine commander Dwight Towers (Peck) and his crew travel to Australia where they join the other survivors to await the fallout that will inevitably kill them.
After arriving in Melbourne, Towers meets Moira Davidson (Gardner) and soon finds himself torn between duty and love. Meanwhile, nuclear scientist Julian Osborn (Astaire) battles depression and decides to enter the Australian Grand Prix alongside many others with nothing left to lose.
