Perry Como - Greatest Hits (Music CD)

As a singer, Perry had three strands to his work. The first consisted of songs that traded on his Italian heritage. His second strand was novelty hits. Some of these were simplistic but inoffensive, some were raucous nonsense (Hot Diggity Dog Ziggity Boom), and some were much classier. Even the glorious Catch A Falling Star could be classed as a novelty record, but it s irresistible. Como's third strand was his best: he was a superb interpreter of sentimental songs, and his voice was like cream in your coffee. In this vein he could almost be all things to all men. The countryish Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes, while Magic Moments is practically a hymn to life's simple pleasures and smalltown Americana. Como's songs were eradefining, the soundtrack to a decade's Sunday dinners. This three-CD set contains an extremely good collection of all Como's 1950s and early 1960s hits (and a lot more besides), after which you may well be tempted to seek out his later recordings as well.
