Johnny Depp and Samantha Morton star in this historical drama directed by Laurence Dunmore. John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester (Depp), is renowned for both his rakish ways and his keen wit. Although he is married, he pursues actress Elizabeth Barry (Morton) and embarks on a passionate affair with her.
When King Charles II (John Malkovich) commissions Rochester to write a play for him, Rochester takes the opportunity to stage a scurrilous satire of the monarch's reign which threatens his standing at court. As Rochester succumbs to his vices, he is finally forced to face the consequences of his actions. The cast also includes Rosamund Pike, Tom Hollander and Johnny Vegas.
