John Wayne stars in this Western directed by Don Siegel. Ageing gunfighter John Bernard Brooks (Wayne) rides into Carson City in January 1901. When his old friend Dr.
Hostleter (James Stewart) confirms that he is dying of cancer and only has weeks to live, Brooks takes refuge in a local boarding house. However, as word spreads about his presence in the town, he is pursued by journalists seeking his life story as well as villains intent on his immediate death. Seeking to die on his own terms, Brooks plans one last stand.
The cast also includes Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard and Scatman Crothers.
