Richard Farnsworth stars in this biographical drama directed by David Lynch. When 73-year-old WWII veteran Alvin Straight (Farnsworth) learns that his estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) has suffered a stroke, he wants to visit him and attempt to heal the rift between them. In poor health himself and unable to drive, he decides to make the 240-mile journey from Laurens, Iowa to Mount Zion, Wisconsin on his lawnmower.
During the course of his journey he exchanges stories with several strangers he meets along the way, changing their lives for the better. The cast also includes Sissy Spacek, Everett McGill and John Farley.
