The term "brat" has followed Nathan Williams for nearly a decade, but at 30 years old, with a successful business and the ongoing success of his band Wavves, his rebellious streak has proven to be not only purposeful but also quite inspiring. "You're Welcome" serves as the soundtrack to this new chapter of freedom in his life. This album represents Williams' playful rebirth as a self-released, self-actualized, and self-promoting punk kingpin. Despite his bold approach, he has emerged not only unscathed but also with a significant advantage.
Williams recorded the album with producer Dennis Herring at his downtown LA studio, and for the first time since his early records, he worked regular office hours and primarily alone. "You're Welcome" features a collection of Williams' quirky, sample-driven ideas. He initially created 40 tracks, which were ultimately narrowed down to twelve concise punk gems. As a sample enthusiast, Williams explored his fascination with 1950s doo-wop as well as international folk music, including Cambodian pop and 1970s South American psychedelia. The result is one of the most diverse and intricate Wavves albums to date.
The track "Come To The Valley" captures a blend of Phil Spector's production style and the Beach Boys' classic '60s high school dance vibe, while the title track "You're Welcome" incorporates sound effects that feel like something from Bizarro World, not to mention Cambodia. Nathan Williams never truly disappeared; he has now ensured that he is here to stay for a long time. And for that, girls and boys, you're welcome.
